Volcanic island of Stromboli 1974:
Luigi has always been a man of nature. Even as a child, he spent his days roaming the hills and olive groves of the volcanic island of Stromboli and looking after the animals he kept on his small farm. He loved enjoying the beauty of the island and couldn't imagine a better place to live.
But in the summer months, when tourists arrived in droves, everything changed. The trash they left behind attracted rats and spoiled the beauty of the island. Luigi couldn't help but pick up the trash and use his cargo end to dump it in a nearby ravine. It was tedious work, but he enjoyed doing it to keep his beloved island clean. One day the mayor came to him and asked him to become the island's official garbage collector. Luigi agreed on the condition that he could have a motorized Ape.
For many years he did his job well and was satisfied with his life.
But then a tragic event led to the construction of a landfill and the hiring of a state-certified, very indifferent garbage collector. Today the smelly garbage is transported to the mainland, but it is unclear whether it actually gets there.
Luigi became a legend. And although he is no longer with us, he will always remain in our hearts and minds. This story is based on true events.
